Germany’s parliament has approved new powers for the eurozone’s crisis fund with a large majority.
In the vote, which was the biggest test of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s leadership since she took power six years ago, 523 lawmakers backed more powers to increase the European Financial Stability Facility to 440bn euros ($600 billion).
The former President of European Commission Romano Prodi said a sceptical German public will come round to supporting the deal.
