Former European Comission president “The message is clear, the Euro is forever”

Romano Prodi interviewed by BBC Radio 4 on february 21st 2015

The Greek government is working on a package of economic reforms that have been demanded by the Eurozone, led by Germany, in return for a four-month extension to its bail-out.

Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis claims his government has stood its ground whilst Dutch finance minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem, head of the Eurogroup, says that Athens had pledged to honour all its debts.

Romano Prodi is the former president of the European Commission, he told Today: ‘There are a lot of countries like Ireland and Spain who made a lot of sacrifices and think Greece should do the same, so Germany was backed by most countries.’

‘We must be satisfied by the fact that there will be negotiations to save the Euro.’

‘We now have a guide for the future of the Euro… Germany has positioned itself as the clear leader.’

Il governo greco sta lavorando su un pacchetto di riforme economiche che sono state richieste dalla zona euro, guidata dalla Germania, in cambio di una proroga di quattro mesi per il suo salvataggio.

Il ministro delle finanze greco Yanis Varoufakis afferma che il suo governo non ha fatto un passo indietro, mentre il ministro delle finanze olandese Jeroen Dijsselbloem, capo dell’Eurogruppo, sottolinea che Atene ha promesso di onorare tutti i suoi debiti.

Romano Prodi è l’ex presidente della Commissione europea, ha detto oggi: ‘Ci sono molti Paesi come l’Irlanda e la Spagna che hanno fatto un sacco di sacrifici e pensano la Grecia debba fare lo stesso, per questo la posizione tedesca è stata sostenuta dalla maggior parte dei Paesi.’

‘Dobbiamo essere soddisfatti per il fatto che ci saranno negoziati per salvare l’Euro.’

‘Ora abbiamo una guida per il futuro dell’Euro … la Germania ha finalmente preso posizione come leader indiscusso.’
